the Volterra Project JUNIOR
I edition

26-29 May 2022
Oudenarde (Belgium)

Because of the very large volume of requests to participate to the Volterra Project from underage guitarists and their parents, we decided to launch a second workshop dedicated to underage students.

The foundation of the Volterra Project, Junior Guitar Institute may seem counterintuitive in a period like the one we are living, when the mainstream approach to cultural and artistic production towards the standardization and maximization of a “product”.

We are, instead, convinced that this approach is the very reason why an experiment like the Volterra Project Junior is needed: an international workshop where students can have a first-hand experience of the powerful synergy of musical excellence and non-competitive exchange and communication.

Like the Volterra Project, the Volterra Project Junior offers 360 degree formative course with highest level guitar master classes, music physiology training, and  introductory seminars of music business self management seminars taught by experienced, internationally renowned professionals.

These courses will be specifically addressed to young guitarist up to 16 years of age. 17 years old are welcome but may also want to consider participation to the regular workshop (they will have to fill the underage waiver - more information on the Volterra Project application page)

What (we are and we do)

the Volterra Project Junior
With the foundation of The Volterra Project Junior we  finally fill an important pedagogical gap: we are now happy and proud to announce the creation of an extension of the Volterra Project, specifically addressed to underage students from 12 to 17.

We firmly believe that the role of music and arts is to contribute to the intellectual, spiritual and social development of every human being and it is, therefore, essential to the education of the younger generations.

The mission of the Volterra Project Junior is therefore to help young guitarists develop a well-rounded and non-competitive approach to performing and to foster a new generation of accomplished young guitarists, who are prepared for the multiple aspects of guitar performance such as technical and artistic excellency and physical health, but also able to enjoy the artistic process as a means of expression, communication and growth.

The Volterra Project Junior offers an innovative 360 degrees training course specially targeted to younger guitarists, articulated into three pillars: the first is grounded on master classes of classical guitar with internationally acclaimed pedagogues; the second focus on music physiology workshops dedicated to the understanding of the body and of its dynamic relation with the instrument; finally, the third pillar adds an additional dimension of reflection on the role of art, not only as technical representation or individual expression, but as a focus in the articulation of human communication and identity, both personal and collective.

Like the project it stems from, the innovative concept of the Volterra Project Junior does not only reside in its didactic offer, but also in the very special context and setting it takes place. Aiming at replacing the traditional competitive culture of the conservatories with a more and nurturing environment, conducive to a real exchange of knowledge and experiences, the workshop will be held in a beautifully restored traditional house in Oudenaarde, in the Flanders region (Belgium), where students and teachers will work and discuss together in a relaxed, non-competitive environment. This seems to be a very simple thing, but it carries with it an enormous change from the aggressive and super-competitive approach that so many schools are transmitting to young students.
 2022 Courses and faculty
The four days long workshop will be articulated in a set of three pillars including guitar master classes, music physiology training, and an ensemble workshop and improvisation sessions taught by experienced, internationally renowned professionals.
Each student will receive:
  • 2 individual guitar masterclasses with Antigoni Goni
  • participation to two group classes  of guitar improvisation
  • 3 sessions of guitar ensemble (preparation of the final concert)
  • 2 morning sessions of physiology
  • 2  afternoon sessions of body and rhythms exercises
  • 2 afternoon sessions of extra activities (to be determined according the needs and age of the applicants)
  • Free ticket for opening concert
  • Concert performance (solo or as part of the guitar ensemble)

Faculty:
Guitar masterclasses - Antigoni Goni
This is the first pillar of our three-pronged approach and will be held by the internationally acclaimed performer and pedagogue Antigoni Goni. In her masterclasses Antigoni Goni will not only put her unmatched artistic skills and long pedagogic experience at the service of the Volterra Project participants, but also tackle many physiology-oriented issues that students denounced during the past decade. Antigoni Goni’s masterclasses will not only focus on technique, sound, interpretation, colors, dynamics, empathy, but will also work on the management of muscular tension and fatigue, body awareness and posture, muscle use, breathing and relaxation and other elements that are too often easily dismissed in teaching younger students.

Music physiology - Michèle Swennen
The second pillar of is the Music Physiology section that this year will be presented by the Belgian dancer and Jaques-Dalcroze rhythmic specialist Michèle Swennen. The physiology classes aim to increase body awareness and mental focus through meditative breath exercises as well as nutritional advice and self- massage exercises. The students will learn a set of basic practices that they can bring home to help them in their future daily routine.

Ensemble workshop - Helen Borremans
The third pillar, the ensemble workshop, will be held by the Belgian guitarist and pedagogue Helen Borremans and will aim at fostering the ability to work and collaborate with others and work towards a common goal as a team. By learning to work in ensemble, young students will benefit from reciprocal inspiration, reinforce their learning process, and discover the added value of sharing an artistic experience and a learning process.
Improvisation sessions

Improvisation Sessions - Luca Isolani and Maarten Vandenbemden
Within the third pillar, an improvisation daily workshop, Luca Isolani and Maarten Vandenbemden will explore how to apply improvisation to our daily practice in music.
The workshops will be closely intertwined with the other activities at the Volterra Project Junior, and propose the various forms of improvisation as a complementary tool for interpretation, physical freedom in playing and stage presence.
Through a variety of group exercises, we experience how improvisation can feed our individual musical expression
