Eddy Malave
Eddy Malave is an Alexander Technique instructor, receiving his certification from the The American Center for the Alexander Technique (A.C.A.T.).
He studied with world renowned teachers such as Thom Lemmons, Deborah Caplan, Bill Connington, Pearl Ausubel, Barbara Conable, Ann Matthews and Pedro de Alcantara. He also worked with instructors including Judith Stern, Barbara Kent, Sarnel Ognus, and Joan Frost to present the technique to medical professionals, performing artists, corporations and at A.C.A.T. In addition, Mr. Malave presented the Alexander Technique as a solo guest teacher at the British Columbia Music Teachers Conference in Surrey, B.C., Canada; at the American Institute of Musical Studies (A.I.M.S.) in Graz, Austria; and at the National Conservatory of Music in Amman, Jordan. Mr. Malave currently serves on the faculty of the music department at New York University (Steinhardt School of Education) as an Alexander Technique instructor.
Mr. Malave began his musical training on the viola in Long Island, New York under the direction of Irene Stitt. Over the course of his career, he has won many awards and competitions and participated in various summer music festival such as Meadowmount (NY), Bowdoin ( ME), Killington (VT), Hart Summer School of Music ( CT), the International Music Festival of Costa Rica (San Jose, Costa Rica), and the International Music Festival of Evian ( France). He holds both Bachelors and Masters degrees in viola performance from The Juilliard School, where he studied under the late Willian Lincer, and received the William Gluck Fellowship. He also studied chamber music with other renowed teachers such as Robert Mann, Lillian Fuchs, Felix Galamir, Roland Vamos, Margaret Pardee, Albert Fuller, Patinka Kopec and Arnold Steinhardt. In addition, he participated in mast classes under Heidi Castleman, Karen Tuttle, and Don McGuiness. Mr. Malave has performed extensively throughout the USA, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Canada, the South Pacific, and Central and South America's.
Mr. Malave has led a diverse career with many unique musical roles. He has performed for President Bill Clinton (Israel Forum Policy, Midleast Peace Talks) as well as for other world leaders and dignitaries at the United Nations. He has also performed with renowed artists including Placido Domingo, Sir Yehudi Menuhin and Maestro Kurt Masur just to name a few and recently performed for Pope Benedict the 16th historical visit to the USA at Yankee Stadium and at St. Patricks Cathedral. He was a founding member of the Arethusa String Quartete, has performed on three tours with the Juilliard Strings on board the Q E 2 and can be heard on CD with the young virtuouso group, The Se Jong Soloists.
Mr. Malave has held the principal viola chair positions with the Prince George Symphony and Kamloops Symphony Orchestras (both in B.C., Canada) , the Orquestra Filarmonica de Lima (Peru) and the Key West Symphony Orchestra in Florida under the direction on Maestra Sebrina Alfonso for three seasons. He has also completed a Baroque recital and held a viola master class for the viola at the National Conservatory of Music in Amman, Jordan.
In addition to classical music performances, Eddy regularly performs, and recorded with popular artists such as U2's Bono, Barry White, Sir Elton John, Billy Joel, Sting, Clay Aiken, Barbara Cook, Chantel, Craig Anderson, A.R. Rahman, Patti Lupone, DJ/Producer Victor Calderone, Ted Mason (of Modern English), Bryin Dale, Derek Rush and Bryan Adams. Always looking for adventure, he has also performed at La Mama's East village experimental theater in “Spring Awakening,"at the Knitting Factory with Gut Bucket, Anti-Social music at Cami Hall and La TEA, Ambitious orchestra at Piano's, and with the Martha Graham Dance Company at the Joyce Theater among many other fantastic projects.
Mr. Malave has a thriving career as a freelance musician performing with the Orchestra of St. Lukes, Prometheus Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Jupiter Symphony, American Ballet Theater (ABT), School of American Ballet, The Chelsea Symphony, the New York Pops Orchestra and the Jovila String Quartet, along with many other different groups and venues throughout the greater NY Metropolitan area. He also performs on and off -Broadway shows. He is currently participating to the Phantom of the Opera (past shows include the Lion King, Kiss Me Kate, Into the Woods, Flower Drum Song, Nine, Gypsy, Frogs, Bombay Dreams, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, Spamalot, Young Frankenstein and The Woman in White). Other Freelance performances include Opera for Dummies, Popera, JesseNormous, Bershire Opera, Sarasota Opera, Lake String Quartet (Yellowstone National Park).
Mr. Malave is also proficient in playing the electric viola, and has worked with various DJ/Producers including Eddie Baez, Gomi, Hex Hector, Razor and Junior Vasquez. He has also performed with the electric viola in some of New York City's most popular clubs and venues such as Avalon @ Limelight, SBNY, Centrofly,The Roxy, Taj, The club @ Stonewall, XL, Crowbar and Spirit.
Mr. Malave currently teaches privately, and serves on the faculties of the Soyulla Performing Arts Program, The Port Jefferson Music Academy and The Third St. Music Settlement. In addition, he received his teaching certification of the Suzuki Method from the School for Strings in NYC.
