Pepa Niebla

Picture
Spanish singer and composer Pepa Niebla is renowned for her vocal versatility that has allowed her to be involved in a great variety of projects: from blues, soul and jazz to Cuban son and popular music. Living in Granada, Havana, London and Brussels gave her the opportunity to grow, learn and experiment in different genres. Now, settled in Belgium, Niebla has found her sound and direction as an artist, bringing to life her own compositions and arrangements with her new project: The Pepa Niebla Quintet.

n 2004, after graduating from the Faculty of Educational Sciences, Niebla embarked on a transformative journey to Havana, Cuba, where she spent three months deeply immersed in Cuban repertoire and the cultural essence of Son, Feeling, and other musical forms. This experience broadened her musical horizons and enriched her understanding of different musical traditions.

After returning from Havana, London became Niebla’s chosen destination, where she spent the next six years and received a call from El Pescador and EMI Spain to record her first album, “Jazz al desnudo,” in 2010, alongside the Málaga-born guitarist and singer Ricky Vivar. This project helped her advance her musical career and reignited her determination to continue her jazz studies, leading her to the Belgian city where she still resides today: Brussels.
The year 2019 was significant for Pepa Niebla, as it was the year she completed her studies with distinction at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels under the guidance of great mentors such as David Linx, Christophe Wallemme, Stephane Galland, Norma Winstone, and John Clayton. It was also the year she recorded what would become her second album.
Titled “Renaissance,” Niebla produced her first album of original compositions, featuring contributions and arrangements of classics by guitarist and composer Toni Mora. Mora accompanies her in this ensemble, along with Belgian pianist Maxime Moyaerts, French double bassist Alex Gilson, and award-winning Dutch drummer Daniel Jonkers released by Hypnote Records two years later.
Despite the unexpected crisis caused by the pandemic in March 2020, “Renaissance” was well-received, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the singer’s career, emphasising her position as a musician. During her tour in Spain, Pepa Niebla had the opportunity to collaborate with Catalan pianist and composer Ignasi Terraza. This unexpected occasion led to the recording of what would become her third album, Pepa Niebla & Ignasi Terraza Trio “En la orilla del Mundo,” along with Horacio Fumero on double bass and Esteve Pi on drums, in February 2023.
Among the live music performances and recordings, Pepa Niebla has shared the stage with many other international musicians. To name a few:
Scott Hamilton, Andrea Motis, Bart Quartier, Nicola Andreoli, Tyreek McDole, Cesar Latorre, Jo Krause, Juan Galiardo, Bart de Nolf, Sal La Rocca, Antonio Lizana, Javier Ruibal, Toni Mora, Hendrick Lasure, Antoine Pierre, Jesús Lavilla, Vincent Bruyninck, Bruno Castellucci, Arturo Sierra, Roberto Nieva, Mimi Verderame, Daniel Jonkers, Bori Albero, Tomás Merlo, Victor Merlo, Julián Sánchez, Jean-Paul Estievenart, Martin Salemi, Lorenzo Di Maio, Bruno Castellucci, Rodrigo Ballesteros, Victor Foulon, Vladimir Torres,  Roberto Nieva, Jasen Weaver, Toño Miguel, Vladimir Torres, Marcos Varela, Naíma Acuña, Ander García, Noam Israeli, Alex Koo, Xavier Tribolet, among many others.
